Per la notte di fine anno scelgo una galassia, tra le poche che ho fatto, perché è l’oggetto che più mi ricorda un fuoco di artificio, una girandola, quasi come M101 nell’Orsa. Infatti qualcuno si ostina a chiamarla con lo stesso nickname: Galassia Girandola, appunto.

La Galassia del Triangolo (M33/NGC598) è una galassia a spirale distante circa 3 milioni di anni luce dalla Terra nella costellazione del Triangolo. Dopo Andromeda, M33 è la galassia non nana più vicina alla Via Lattea. Può essere vista con un binocolo sotto cieli più che perfetti, come una macchia ovaleggiante e dai contorni irregolari, qualcuno si picca di riuscire a vederla anche a occhio nudo in visione distolta.

E’ piuttosto piccola rispetto alle sue vicine, la Via Lattea e la Galassia di Andromeda, ma in realtà ha dimensioni medie rispetto alle altre galassie spirali presenti nell'Universo. Dopo le due sorelle maggiori, è il terzo membro del Gruppo Locale per grandezza e potrebbe essere una compagna di Andromeda, alla quale è gravitazionalmente legata.

M33 è ricca di regioni HII (nebulose a emissione contenenti idrogeno ionizzato) visibili meglio con lunghe esposizioni in Ha/OIII/SII, catalogate anche  separatamente, come NGC 604 nell'angolo nord-est di M33 e altre tre regioni H II più piccole: NGC 588, NGC 592, NGC 595.

L’ho fatta alla Carlotta a novembre, c’era Stefano e anche Luciano che era venuto a rilassarsi un po’, senza strumenti. Mi ha fatto un po’ penare la guida, alla fine l’ho fatta con K3 e la webcam, con buona pace di CCD e software sofisticati ! Al solito poche pose, le nuvole andavano e venivano, poco più di un’ora e solo colore, mentre le numerose nebulose hanno bisogno di un bel po’ di Ha. Buono a sapersi per la prossima volta.

A proposito di prossime volte, con questo post chiudo un ciclo, mi fermo per un po’, ho bisogno di riordinare hardware, software e soprattutto le idee. Ci sono periodi per parlare e scrivere e periodi per ascoltare e leggere.

Inoltre voglio cominciare la nuova campagna con la nuova CCD, le nuove ottiche e il nuovo PC, tutto nuovo, meno me. Bisogna mettere a punto un sacco di dettagli, appunti da riordinare, vorrei farlo in modo organico, un manuale, per esempio, magari un corso.

Credo che dire e dare agli altri quello che pensi e che fai sia periodicamente necessario in questa attività, non posso passare la vita a guardare in su da solo, se no mi prendono per matto !

My Notes

For the last night of the year I choose a galaxy, among the few I have, because is the object most resembling to a firework, a pinwheel. Almost like the M101 in UMA. Somebody, in fact, keeps on calling M33 with the same nickname: Pinwheel Galaxy.

The Triangulum Galaxy (M33/NGC598) is a spiral galaxy some 3 million ly apart from the Earth in the constellation of Triangulum. After Andromeda (M31) M33 is the non dwarf galaxy closest to the Milky Way. It can be seen with a binoculars under perfect skies, as a oval stain with uneven edges, somebody even claims to be able to see M33 by naked eye by turning the view !

It is rather small with respect to the neightbours, our Milky Way and Andromeda, but it is in the average scale in size compared with the other spiral galaxies in the Universe. After its major sisters, M33 is the third member of the Local Group by size and might be the companion of Andromeda itself, to which is gravitionally related.

M33 is very rich of HII regions (bright nebulae containing ionized hydrogen), better visible with long exposures in the Ha/OIII/SII bands, that are catalogued separately, like NGC604 at the NE corner, and other smaller, such as NGC588, NGC 592, NGC 595.

I have made M33 at the Carlotta, in November, Stefano was there, as well as Luciano who came just to relax, without any instruments. It made me labour a bit, the guide in particular, I used K3 and the webcam finally, to the face of more sophisticated CCDs and software ! Few exposures, as usual, clouds were coming and going, a bit longer than one hour and only RGB, while the internal nebulae would need long Ha exposure. To keep in mind for the next time !

By the way of the next time, with the present post I conclude a cycle and like to stop for a while, I need to tidy up my hardware and software and my ideas above all. There is a time for speaking and writing as well as a time for listening and reading.

Also, I have to start a new campaign with the new CCD, new optics and a new notebook, everything new, but myself. A lot of details must be still chosen and fixed. I have also a quantity of notes to collate, I like to do with the right approach, an handbook, for instance, even a brief elementary course, may be !

I believe that saying and giving what you think and do is periodically mandatory in my activity, I can’t spend my life looking above alone, otherwise they might think I'm crazy !
