La Propeller è una nebulosa a emissione situata nel Cigno poco a NE della vasta regione nebulare della Butterfly (IC1318), intorno a gamma Cygni. Ha una pronunciata forma a elica ed è ben visibile nel sottofondo di idrogeno che la circonda. E’ una specie di oggetto misterioso, classificata solo in cataloghi particolari, come DWB111-MRSL479- Simeis 57.

Non ci sono ipotesi sull’origine della sua peculiare struttura, così come non è nota la distanza, né il meccanismo di brillanza. Si calcola che la sua massa totale sia molto ridotta, equivalente a poche diecine di masse solari.

In effetti è un oggetto debole, che ho ripreso durante più notti, anche a distanza di un mese, ricorrendo al binning 2 sia in Ha e OIII, sia ex-post in RGB. Questo ha migliorato la luminanza finale ma complicato non poco le compositazione dei colori: ne avrò fatte almeno una diecina. Qualcuna mi piace di più, qualcuna di meno. Qualcuna privilegia l’elegante forma a elica che a me, comunque, suggerisce più un cravattino a fiocco.

E’ un bell’oggetto comunque e magari meriterebbe una rivisitazione con maggior risoluzione.

My comments

The Propeller Nebula, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, NE of Sadr, part of the much larger association of ionized hydrogen gas known as Butterfly nebula (IC1318). Its bright S-shaped curve makes it well observable in the surrounding hydrogen sea.

It is a rather mysterious object, classified in minor catalogues, DWB111, Simeis57, MRSL479. The origin of its peculiar structure is still completely unknown, as well as the nebula's distance and source of excitation are also undetermined. DWB-111 mass is believed to be quite low, probably less than a few tens of solar masses.

The Propeller is indeed week to the sensor, I took it during several separate sessions, making use of 2x2 binning in both Ha and OIII, as well as in RGB (extracted). That approach increased the strength but considerably complicated the combination of colours. I worked out, infact, at least ten different compositions, some agreable, some others questionable.

Although the peculiar propeller shape resembles to me more to a bow tie, this object is  worth to be published and even to be revisited making use of a higher resolution camera.
