IC 1396 è un ammasso aperto molto sparso, associato a una vasta nebulosa diffusa, visibile in Cefeo, a una distanza di circa 3000 ly in un tratto di Via Lattea parzialmente oscurato da densi banchi di nebulose oscure, in una regione galattica ricca di polveri e gas neutri con associate stelle giovani e calde di colore blu.

La nebulosa è una vera e propria incubatrice di stelle, situata subito a sud di μ Cephei (a destra in alto), una supergigante rossa, variabile con periodo di 2 anni, migliaia di volte più massiccia e brillante del nostro Sole.

Il grande complesso nebuloso è attraversato da numerose macchie scure, che si rivelano essere dei globuli di Bok, ossia regioni della nebulosa particolarmente concentrate dove si formano nuove stelle.

Una nebulosa oscura che si sovrappone all'oggetto, vdB 142, nota e molto fotografata come Proboscide d'Elefante, si può notare in basso nella foto, anche se a me sembra piuttosto una testa umana che emerge dalla nuvola.

L’intera nebulosa, la IC 1396 è piuttosto facile ai primi scatti, anche se per fare emergere i dettagli ci vuole tempo e l’uso di filtri interferenziali, tipicamente il solito Ha, anche se l’oggetto emette molto nella riga HII.

Ho ripreso questo bell’oggetto a Pian della Carlotta, comodo posticino subito a nord di Cerveteri, aggiungendo le pose Ha riprese in Austria sotto un favoloso cielo stellato. Diverse altre prove le avevo fatte in precedenza al Passo del Diavolo e a Fonte Vetica, vicino Campo Imperatore.

Lo consiglio ai principianti, viene fuori subito e tanto lo fai, tanto ti rende !

My comments

IC 1396 is a quite spread open cluster, associated to a very large diffuse nebula, well visible in the constellation Cepheus. It is placed at some 3000 ly in a segment of the Milky Way partially eclipsed by dense bulks of dark nebulae, in a galactic region very rich of dusts and neutral gases, with many young blue stars associated.

The nebula is a real stellar nursery, just south of μ Cephei (upper right), a red supergiant variable with a 2 years period, thousand times bigger and more brilliant than the Sun.

The large nebular complex is crossed by several Blok globules, dark clouds of particularly dense cosmic dust in which star formation takes place. One of those dark nebulae, known as the Elephant Trunk (vdB 142), can be easily observed in the picture, although its shape resembles for me more a human head emerging from the cloud.

The entire IC1396 is rather ready to shots, although details require long exposures, particularly with Ha filters and possibly at HII frequency lines as well, where the gases radiate markedly.

I have worked out this beautiful object mainly at Pian della Carlotta, nice place close to Cerveteri (Roma), adding Ha exposure taken in Austria, under a fabulous dark starry sky. Several trials I also made before in other mountain sites, such as Pescasseroli and Fonte Vetica, in the Abruzzi region, not far from Rome.

I recommend this object to beginners, it comes out soon and gives you back right according the time you spend on it !
